Introduction to Partial Payment

Partial payment means paying only a portion of the total amount owed, instead of settling the full balance at once. It’s a way to fulfill part of a financial obligation while leaving the remaining amount to be paid later.

There are actually two flows on how this Partial Payment works;

  • Old Order Flow
  • New Order Flow

Old Partial Payment Flow

In the old flow, Partial Payment was processed by creating a *dummy product* representing the upfront amount that the merchant wanted to collect from the customer.

How Old Order Flow Works (Partial Payment Flow Version 1)

  • Once the customer places Partial Payment order, a new dummy product will be created with the Partial amount paid. This dummy product usually disappears within 10-15 mins of creation on website.
  • That dummy product will then be cancelled and the remaining amount will be shown as a new order placed.
  • After the partial amount is paid, the order is placed as a *prepaid order* initially.
  • The same order is then *updated* with complete details, including:
    • Total order value
    • Advance amount received
    • Remaining (COD) amount
  • This flow is still functional and many merchants continue to use it without any issues

New Partial Payment Flow – Improved & Enhanced

In the new flow, the process has been improved by removing the need for dummy products entirely. Instead, the application uses *Shopify’s Bundles feature* to handle the Partial Payment logic more efficiently.

How New Order Flow Works (Partial Payment Flow Version 2)

  • No dummy product is created during checkout
  • Shopify Bundles are used to directly process the partial and remaining amounts within the same order.
  • The complete order information is available instantly, including:
    • Full order amount
    • Advance collected
    • Remaining amount (COD)
