# Set Up and Activate Partial Payment

> Install COD King, check your payment gateway, open Partial payments & COD, add the app embed and switch Partial Payment on.

Setup takes about ten minutes. You can come back and change anything later, so do not wait for a perfect configuration before switching it on.

## Before you start

> Your Shopify store must be connected to a payment gateway that is set to **Auto-capture**. If it is not, upfront payments are only authorised, not collected, at checkout.

You also need the COD King app installed. If you have not done that yet, open the Shopify App Store, search for **COD King** and click **Install**. Approve the permissions so the app can read your catalog.

## 1. Open Partial payments & COD

**1. Open COD King**

In the Shopify admin, click **COD King** under **Apps** in the left sidebar.

**2. Go to Settings → Partial payments & COD**

Under COD King, click **Settings**, then choose **Partial payments & COD**.

The page opens with a banner called **Activate Partial Payments** and links to **Customize**, **Learn more**, **Watch Setup Video**, **Partial Payment Demo** and **Chat with us**.

## 2. Turn on the COD King app embed

COD King shows its popup through a theme app embed. In the COD King dashboard, find the **Theme App Embed** row and click **Open Theme**. In the theme editor, switch on the **COD Kings OTP block** and save.

## 3. Create your payment rules

Partial Payment does nothing until at least one payment rule exists. Read [Payment rules](https://codking.tech/documentation/partial-payment/payment-rules.md) and create the options you want to offer. Your rules are saved even while the feature is switched off, so you can build them first and activate later.

## 4. Activate

Tick **Activate Partial Payments**. The helper text under it says: *Turn this on to offer part payment now and the rest on delivery. Your rules are saved either way.*

A black **Save** bar ("Unsaved changes") appears at the top of the page. Click **Save**. The banner badge then shows **Active**.

>
> Nothing on this page is stored until you click **Save** in that bar. If you leave the page without saving, your changes are lost. Click **Discard** to throw changes away on purpose.

## 5. Check it as a shopper

Open your storefront, add a product and press the buy button. Complete the details step and look at the **Pay via** screen. You should see one line per rule that applies to your cart. ## If you do not see your options

| What you see | Likely reason |
| :- | :- |
| No payment screen at all | **Activate Partial Payments** is off, or the app embed is off in the theme editor. |
| "No payment option applies to your cart" | The cart matches no rule. Check cart range, product filters and zipcode rules in [Who sees a rule](https://codking.tech/documentation/partial-payment/rule-conditions.md). |
| One option is missing | A condition on that rule hides it. See [Who sees a rule](https://codking.tech/documentation/partial-payment/rule-conditions.md). |
| Upfront payment not collected | Your payment gateway is not on Auto-capture. |
